Terrific Kids-October

Terrific Kids is a program which is presented by the Kiwanis Club of Richmond. Kiwanis likes to recognize students for achieving their goals in school. Once a month a representative of the Kiwanis will visit our classroom to present a certificate and a small token to 1-3 students.
Congratulations to Terrell, Jamia, and Dennis for being our Terrific Kids for October!  Thank you, Kiwanis Club of Richmond for sponsoring this program!

Daily 5: Work on Writing

Last week we learned about Work on Writing!  It is so much fun!
We learned to underline words we're not sure how to spell after stretching out the sounds and then move on!
We have to write the whole time!
We have to stay in one spot!
 We have to work quietly!
We have to quickly choose what we want to write about!  We can use our "What to Write About" anchor chart if we are having trouble choosing.
We have to get started quickly.
We can get comfortable anywhere in our classroom!
The morning is a great time to help your child decide what he/she wants to write about for the day!
 We are building our stamina!

Science

We have been learning about earth and sun relationships in science.
We learned that temperature is how hot or cold something is.
We learned that a thermometer is a tool that measures temperature.
Here we are measuring the temperatures of ice water, room temperature water, and hot water.
We also learned that there are 4 seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall.
We learned that the sun stays out the longest in the summer and the shortest amount of time in winter.
We learned that the sun heats the earth.
We learned that scientists make predictions. This group predicted that the sun would warm the water the most.
This group predicted that the sun would warm the sand the most.  Nobody predicted that the sun would warm the soil the most.
We went outside and took the temperature of sand, soil, and water.
We watched our cups and measured the temperature after 10 minutes in the sun.  We recorded our data.
We continued to watch our cups and measured the temperature after 20 minutes in the sun.  We recorded our data again.  We were starting to get hot!
We watched our cups for 10 more minutes and measured the temperature after 30 minutes in the sun.  We recorded our data.
 Here's what we measured!
It was a gorgeous day for an outside science experiment!
We concluded that the sun warmed up the sand and soil the most.  It warmed up the water the least.

Pattern Practice

We've been working hard learning about repeating patterns!
We will be learning about growing patterns this week!

Here are some online games you can play to practice!

http://www.primarygames.com/patterns/question1.htm

As you get our weekly updates look on the site IXL to practice math concepts we are learning!  If you are finding your child is having difficulty with first grade concepts check out the kindergarten skills.  If you find that first grade skills are too easy for your child let them try the second grade skills!  You do not need to be a member to enjoy the skill practice!  Being a member only saves your data online!  Enjoy!

Spelling City

One of the homework choices on Speller's Choice (homework) each week is to go to Spelling City.  Our class link is http://www.spellingcity.com/srhendricks78/ .  It is an awesome site!  "Teach Me" is a fantastic resource, especially at the beginning of the week!  Your child can take a practice Spelling Test.  This would be a great activity for Thursday night.  There are tons of games to help make word study fun!  This week's word study group words and word wall words have been posted on Spelling City.  Your child should complete one activity for his/her word study words (after sorting) AND one activity for his/her word wall words every night for homework .

Word Study and Word Wall Words

Word Study groups have begun!  There are 4 groups.  I meet with each group on Monday to introduce the new words.  Students sort and check their words every day.  On Monday, they complete a writing sort in their Word Study notebook.  On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, students get to choose an activity from the Word Study Tic-Tac-Toe board to complete.  On Friday, students take a word study test and glue their words in their notebook.  Students will be tested every quarter and groups will change based on test results.
The pink group is working on initial and final consonants.
The orange group is working on r-controlled vowels.
The red group is working on different vowel word families.
The green group is working on initial consonant digraphs.
Students should be sorting and checking their words at home on a nightly basis.  They should also be completing one activity per night using their word study words and one activity per night using their word wall words.  Please see the post on homework for more information.

Pajama Day!

Our class worked SO hard as a team during the first few weeks of school!  Every time the entire class was caught doing an excellent job, Mrs. Hendricks pulled a Bingo letter out of the bucket!  When we got 5 in a row, we won a prize!  Our first prize was Pajama Day!  We're working hard to earn another prize!
We got to read in our PJs!
I LOVE that look that Terrell is giving me!
We got to go to Math Tubs in our PJs!
Everything is better in PJs!
